Raising Lipedema Awareness | Strategies for Reaching Fellow Patients, Doctors, and More
Happy Lipedema Awareness Month! We all know the feeling. You learn about lipedema and suddenly everything makes sense! Why didn't anyone tell us sooner?! Many of you have asked how to raise awareness about lipedema so others don't have to suffer as much as we did. Lipedema is a fat disorder and is not just fat or cellulite! Contrary to popular belief, you can also get a lot of relief from conservative treatments.
In this video, Rebekah discusses her strategies for educating other potential lipedema patients (no, she doesn't approach strangers in public) and resources to educate our doctors. Links to all resources are below.
All of these resources are FREE except one! If you do purchase through the Amazon link below for that item I may earn a small commission that helps offset my costs for running the website and channel. That has no bearing on my recommendation.

    Thank you for this video. A lot of my chronic lower leg and ankle swelling has been greatly improved by low carb eating. I follow Dr.Berg dietary recommendations. I take 5-10,000 units of Vitamin D daily. Dr.Berg said high carb dietary intake causes the carbohydrates to bind with water and this creates swelling. I lost 35-40 pounds of body weight since beginning low carb eating. I struggled with tired, heavy and swollen legs for many years until going low carb. I still have cold skin sensitivity in my lower body. I am 60 years old and worked as a nurse for years. Standing on my feet for a shift of nursing work was very difficult for me. The soreness was always there. I did not know I had lipedema before watching UA-cam videos and doctors would tell me l needed to lose weight. Even when I was considered a normal weight I still had problems with swelling and tired legs. The swelling was worse around the time of my menstrual periods.

    I love my rebounder! I had to slowly build up time it took before my calves hurt, started at 5 mins max, but now I can go 45 mins of I'm watching a show. otherwise I usually just do 10 mins little bounce with feet not leaving rebounder followed by 10 mins low scissor steps. it also feels more comfortable if you wear tight/supportive leggings/shorts and tank top. this is the only exercise that engages your entire body at the same time, and is really great to move lymph system. note: good ones are "tuned" to give you energy. cheap ones will suck the energy out of you! so pass on that good deal at wallmart! and your neighbors won't hear you as you won't touch the floor!😄

    I just found this video today and almost all of the symptoms describe me. For me this is concentrated in my upper arms and thighs. My forearms and calves are normal. I do have a question - lipedema isn't the same as lymphedema, right? A lot of the comments seem to use the terms interchangeably.

      @racheliza7604 rebounding is great for moving lymph! I don't have one (apartment life!) but it looks like a lot of fun. The brand I most often hear people praise is Bellycon: amzn.to/45wfBxH They are a little pricey people say it's worth it. If you want to feel a little more stable you can also add a handle bar to hold on to. A cute portable rebounder for under the desk or travel is the Trampolette: amzn.to/3RzVvwA I have even heard of people taking these along on long car trips! Hi Sturdy Woman! I love your channel! I have watched a few of your videos and bought the vibration plate with your link and love it! yesterday I went to a vein clinic for a free consultation and the doctor prescribed a pump just like yours! Same brand! I had a hysterectomy 5 weeks ago and met my deductible. The doctor thought my insurance would pay for this...will wait and see. Thanks for showing how to use it! Do you see a difference in the size of your legs when you are done? The vein doctor told me I would, and I hope he is right!

      @AnchorMoments I'm so glad things are going well!! If your doctor prescribed the pump then the insurance should cover it, but fingers crossed! I owed a percentage after my insurance and FlexiTouch gave me a 0% interest payment plan for the difference, including the deductible. It definitely helps my swelling. You will know it is working if you are running to the bathroom as soon as you finish :D Using the vibration plate or dry brushing before you pump will loosen everything up and help it work even better. I have had my LifePro Rumblex 4D vibration plate since 2018 and got it when the company was in its early startup phase. I went directly to LifePro and it is by far the best piece of equipment to help manage this disease. I have both Lipoedema and for years knew something was wrong-it was a knee surgery that caused my right knee and thigh to swell - the surgery should have been a simple one, but because doctors didn’t know or care to understand how lymph nodes could be damaged, I became a victim of their lack of knowledge and paying the price.

    The term you use "reversed" your lipedema and lymphedema. Are you saying that it's cured or it's management treatable? I thought that the lymph damage parts were not reversed. The skin damage from lymphedema is not the same. How can it be reversed back to its normal self?

    • @sturdywoman
      @sturdywoman 6 днів тому

      @theresadurham3777 great question! You are totally correct that there is not "getting rid" of lipedema. I have, however, reversed the progression and gone back to a lower stage. Check out my pictures here: ua-cam.com/video/MwK_aUNbG-Y/v-deo.html

    I am SOOOO happy that I'm not the only one who ops to lay down when using my vibration machine! I actually rig mine by placing a wooden board i have and bridge it between two parsons chairs and i sit the machine on the board. This is set up at the foot of my bed and now the machine is at the height of the bed. I lay on the bed with my legs lying on the machine and it feels awesome!! The issue is i also want to alternate between this arrangement and also set it on the floor to stand on it. So i constantly have to lift it on and off the floor & its very heavy. I've been doing this insanity for 5yrs now and luckily never dropped it. I dont recommend anyone else doing as i do... that said i intend buy an upgraded one and then keep my current one always platformed at the foot of my bed. 😅

      @sabrinamcewen4328 you have no idea how many times I've considered rigging up something similar - ha! Thank you for the real life inspiration. And +1 to it being heavy. Talk about upper body workout :D

    That is hard hearing about your early experiences. And shocking about the Dunkin Donuts story 😣 Your parents sound emotionally abusive and your brothers certainly didn’t help. Nor did mine. My father used to laugh (not in a kind way) about how I looked like the ‘Michelin man’ as a baby - so obviously the signs were there even as far back as that. I actually wonder if I was malnourished as my mother told me they put me in a seperate room from birth and she stopped feeding me during the night at 6 weeks old because I’d stopped waking up. I suspect she was the one that stopped waking up. I looked puffy as a toddler. The next ‘joke’ my father had was they wanted to nickname me ‘fudge’ because I liked eating it so much. Seems my mother was the one making the stuff (butter & sugar) and giving it to me. I never really was overweight as a child or teen but because my arms and legs were never lean I always felt fat. My older brother despised girls that were fat and I always felt that contempt coming from him. And actually still do even as an adult if my weight goes up. Families.. 🙄

      @lkr2025 thank you for your kind words. I made this video in part because when I first started the channel people questioned whether I really had lipedema and said I didn't understand what it was like to be body shamed. These tender childhood things end up shaping us, but I am grateful that it mostly made me stronger. I hope you feel the same way about your painful experiences. You certainly went through too much too! Sending big hugs <3

    I’ve had to explain lipoedema to nearly every medical professional I’ve seen. None have heard of it. After explaining, one actually said “oh, fat is fat”. {{sigh}} I’ll be ordering pamphlets!

    • @sturdywoman
      @sturdywoman 6 днів тому

      @Kaylyn628 it's so frustrating isn't it! Often even the ones who have heard of it have also heard the common misconception that there is nothing you can do to manage it. Ugh. Make sure you get some of the clinician's guides too! They include the diagnostic codes and a QR code linked to the US Standard of Care for Lipedema <3

    I am wondering if actual regular fasting might help. Maybe 2-3 days per month or even week. It is advised as a metabolic way of helping kill cancer cells by starving them of glucose and switching the body to ketones. Perhaps it could reduce the number of fat cells. Dr Thomas Segfried has videos on metabolic approaches. He argues inflammation can cause cancer because it would impede oxygen to the mitochondria. If they do not die, they can convert to a process where they start fermenting glucose and glutamine for fuel. Therefore it is even more important we try to reduce inflammation.

      @sturdywoman 6 днів тому

      @lkr2025 fasting has been in my toolkit for about three years and I love what it does for my swelling and inflammation. I originally did a lot of alternate day fasting but more recently I switched to less frequent 3-day fasts. I have an old video on fasting here: ua-cam.com/video/5FJynEQd8Xg/v-deo.html
